YES YES YES!!! Other homeschool mamas have been telling me for 2 years to try Reading Eggs. I was paying for Powerhomeschool and also Teacherfilebox.com. I’ll talk about those in another blog. And I was paying for Hooked on Phonics. I didn’t wanna spend the extra $10 a month! Truth be told, I paid for Hooked on Phonics for about 3 months. The first week my daughter was obsessed with it. 2nd week still had interest but it was waning. After 4 to 5 weeks, it was pulling hair to get her interested in even starting the program. By no means am I trying to say Hooked on Phonics wasn’t good. It was amazing! The growth she had in that months time, I was so proud of her.
My daughter is a very young first grader, we started at age 5! So she is struggling with phonics sounds and reading. I think we all know and understand that without hammering out those phonics sounds, reading is not gonna happen! We are actually struggling in our regular curriculum, cause it is so hard! I really feel after spending some time in this program it will let her gain some confidence and some phonics skills.
What is Reading Eggs?
Reading eggs is an app for your computer or tablet that teaches children phonics, spelling and math! With Reading Eggs, we are on day 60 (updated) at the time of this blog! The variety and amount of things to do in each lesson is amazing! It’s repetitive in the sense they will go over the “n” sound 50 times in one block of lessons. But there are quite a few different types of lessons in each group.
Today, she had to find the letter p, simple letter recognition. Then it went on to matching uppercase and lowercase letters. It showed objects like a pig and an umbrella and she had to find the picture that starts with the “p” sound. They have a little book to read with words and pictures. There is an audio feature where the program will read the book or your child can read it themselves. The book is very simple, with the pictures even a 2 year old could read the book. As we are advancing the program is getting harder and she is still doing amazing. She has to create whole words with tiles, for instance an “A” “P” and “M”. They will then need to create the word map as there is a picture showing a map.
Now its more they are working on the letters “ap” map cap tap etc. They are having her spell words and the books are getting harder and harder to read. But she is doing it!
They also have a math section in the program. I will talk about that in another blog!
As we continue on in the program, I will update this blog or create a new one with her progress! The lessons being so varied and having so much content is really keeping her very engaged. She is excited every day to use the program. There is also a section where they create their own book. I’m really more focused on the phonics portion of the program, so we haven’t had much time to play with the other features. Update! She has way more confidence with reading, or trying to!
Hey there! Thank you very much for your review. I was deciding between Hooked on Phonics and Reading Eggs. And your post came at the right time. I have been hearing good comments about Reading Eggs. And your post has confirmed them all! Thank you very much for your helpful opinion.
Your welcome! I hope you enjoy the app as much as we do!
My granddaughter is being homeschooled and has just turned five. We are beginning to teach her how to read, as she does know all her letters and the alphabet. We are using some phonics books, but I was not familiar with Reading Eggs. So if I understand correctly, your daughter started with Hooked on Phonics, but then didn’t continue with it.
So is Reading Eggs also using the phonics way of learning to read? Or is it a different system? How does one access Reading Eggs, is it though a website, or do they have an app? Thank you.
Yes so my daughter did hooked on phonics an app on her tablet. She got bored so now we are using another app Reading Eggs
Really haven’t heard about reading eggs and I hope to check it out meanwhile thank you for your review of the program as it will help me in taking a decision about which one to go with. Your review is detailed and to the point and you have refused the temptation of juggling so many things in the program rather to take them on as the child progresses. That will be good as we follow the progress of your child. Thank you.
I really love the fact she isn’t getting bored with it and she enjoys learning! Thanks for reading!
A very big thank you for sharing your experience with reading eggs. I have been thinking of how to get my son started with phonics. I spoke with his teacher, but she complained that her schedule had been tight already. But with an online phonics class, and top of it is that they also have a maths class that we can also enjoy. Once again, I say thank you
